Which Small-Engine Oil should I use?

Spring is the time to store your snowblower and prepare your lawnmower, pressure washer, generator, and other outdoor power equipment for the upcoming season.

Before storing equipment, make sure to change the oil. Used oil contains acidic byproducts that, if allowed to sit for months, can cause engine damage.

If you forgot to change the oil in your lawnmower or other equipment prior to storing it for the winter, now is an excellent time to do so.

Utilize a high-quality small-engine oil, not a low-cost automotive oil.

While it is natural to assume that small equals simple when it comes to engines, this is frequently not the case.

In comparison to liquid-cooled automotive engines, air-cooled small engines operate at a higher temperature, operate at constant load, generate more contaminants (many do not use filters), and are exposed to mud, dirt, and rain. Additionally, they are frequently overlooked in terms of maintenance.

However, the majority of small-engine oils are simply rebranded automotive oils that are formulated for fuel economy rather than engine durability.

By contrast, AMSOIL Synthetic Small-Engine Oil is not a rebranded automotive oil; it is specifically formulated to meet the unique requirements of small engines. It contains a high concentration of zinc anti-wear additives to guard against wear and extend engine life. Additionally, it contains strong detergency additives that help combat harmful deposits.

Consider the valve-guide area in the bottom image of a Honda* 5-hp engine that was tested in the AMSOIL mechanical lab. A competitor’s oil deposited heavily, causing the valve to small engine motor oil stick. Indeed, the technician who dismantled the engine was unable to remove the valve due to the presence of excessive deposits. If this engine had remained in service, it was only a matter of time before it failed, necessitating a costly repair or replacement. In comparison, AMSOIL 10W-30 Synthetic Small-Engine Oil reduced deposits and kept the engine running strong.

This season, ensure the protection of your fleet of small-engine-powered equipment by choosing AMSOIL 10W-30 Synthetic Small Engine Oil.
