Racing Only Motor Oil
Should I use AMSOIL racing motor oil in my car?
When deciding whether or not to use AMSOIL racing motor oil on their vehicles, gearheads and other enthusiasts frequently use the following logic:
- Engines used in racing are more severe than my engine.
- Engines used in racing require racing motor oil.
- As a result, for the best protection, I should use racing oil in my vehicle.
True, a typical racing engine generates more severe operating conditions than a typical passenger car engine.
A 900-horsepower Pro 4 race truck’s engine can reach temperatures of over 300oF (149oC). Engine temperatures in a typical passenger car/light truck range between 195 and 220 degrees Fahrenheit (90 and 104 degrees Celsius).
So, why not put racing oil in your everyday driver? For starters, racing oils are changed on a regular basis.
Most professionals change their oil every couple of races, if not more. As a result, racing oils have a lower total base number (TBN) than passenger car motor oils.
TBN is an indicator of the oil’s detergency and ability to neutralize acidic byproducts. TBNs are higher in oils with longer drain intervals.
The AMSOIL Signature Series Synthetic Motor Oil has a TBN of 12.5 to allow for a 25,000-mile/one-year drain interval.
DOMINATOR Synthetic Racing Oil, on the other hand, has a TBN of 8 because we recommend changing it more frequently. DOMINATOR is not what you want in your engine when you’re driving thousands of miles and several months between oil changes, no matter how well it performs on the track.
In conclusion, use regular motor oil in your daily driver.
A finely balanced formulation is required to perform the tasks of a passenger car motor oil. Too much or too little performance in one area can have a negative impact on other areas – and the overall protection and performance of the oil. A racing oil’s task list, on the other hand, is much shorter.
You’re probably familiar with the axiom “the right tool for the right job.” The same is true for motor oil. It’s best to save racing oil for competition engines and use a properly formulated passenger car motor oil in your daily driver
