There are a lot of fuel additives and engine cleaners on store shelves that claim to save money on gas, make the engine run more smoothly, reduce emissions, make the engine last longer, give it more horsepower, and more. Do fuel additives work? Does cleaning the fuel injectors work? In this post, we’ll take a look.
Do Fuel Additives Work?
A quick search on the internet shows that there are many articles that say they don’t. There must be a reason why so many people don’t trust fuel additives.
Most drivers expect to see the benefits of fuel additives right away, but it takes a few tanks of treated fuel before most of them make a noticeable difference in how well the car runs.
Engine Condition Affects Whether Fuel Additives Work
This is what usually happens.
Over time, deposits form on the fuel injectors, valves, and in the combustion chamber of your engine. These deposits reduce the engine’s performance. Modern injectors are very well made and have very tight tolerances. Even small deposits can mess up the spray pattern and reduce power and gas mileage.
The problem is especially bad in high-pressure common-rail (HPCR) diesel engines and direct-injection engines, where the injectors are placed in the combustion chamber, where they are exposed to very high temperatures.
Eventually, you’ll notice a drop in power, throttle response, gas mileage, or how easy it is to drive. A fuel additive can be bought at a gas station or auto parts store.
“Increases Fuel Economy!” it proclaims. “Wow,” you think as you pour the bottle’s contents into your gas tank.
But nothing has changed by the time you pull into your driveway. Or again when you get to work the next day. You ask yourself, “Do these fuel add-ons even work?”
Is Fuel Injector Cleaner Effective?
When it seems like your fuel injector cleaner didn’t work, what went wrong?
In a strict sense, nothing. You probably bought a cheap fuel injector cleaner with few cleaning agents because it was cheap. If you keep buying the additive and putting it in every tank of gas, you might notice a slight boost in power, gas mileage, or how easy it is to drive. This could take weeks or months.
Then you can keep using the additive to keep the engine running well. The fuel injector cleaner did work, and it did what it said it would do. It just didn’t do it fast enough or with enough force.

What is the best cleaner for gasoline direct-injection (GDI) engines that use fuel injectors?
In GDI engines, the injectors are inside the combustion chamber, which is a very hot, high-pressure area. This makes them more likely to get deposits. If there is a lot of pressure and the fuel isn’t burned all the way, the amount of soot (particulate matter) can go up by a lot.
Most of the time, direct injection makes 30–40 times more soot than port fuel injectors (PFI). Even a small amount of gunk on the injectors can cause more pollution and wear, as well as less power and better gas mileage.

A lot of fuel additives are sold as “upper-cylinder lubricants.” Because combustion makes a lot of heat and the oil-control piston ring can only do so much, there isn’t enough oil at the top of each cylinder. This can cause the rings and cylinders to wear down, which makes the engine less powerful and less efficient.
Again, though, the chart shows that some additives don’t improve lubricity much, if at all.
