1) Keep the chain on your chainsaw sharp
If you’ve ever tried to push a dull chain through wood, you know how important a sharp chain is.
Sharpening a chain is an art, so if you don’t want a bunch of useless chains hanging on the wall of your garage, you should go to a pro.
It probably won’t cost more than $10, but it will save you a lot of trouble.
But if you’re like me and like the challenge of learning something new, here are some helpful tips.
- Use the right size for the file. You can find this information on the chain’s box or in your owner’s manual.
- File in the right direction. Most home improvement stores sell a file gauge that makes sure you hold the file the right way.
- Use the same number of file strokes on each tooth (typically 3-6).
- Pay attention to the depth gauges (the protrusions directly in front of each tooth). If you file them too much, the saw can cut too deeply into the wood and stop or, worse, throw you off balance.Again, use a gauge to make sure the depth gauges are sharpened the right way.
2) Make sure the chain on your chainsaw is tight enough
If the chain is too tight, it can get stuck and stop the saw. On a bar without a roller-tip, a chain that is too tight can get too hot.
When adjusting the chain, hold the bar’s tip up as far as it will go and tighten the tensioning screw until the bar’s underside is no longer loose.
3) Break in your new chainsaw chain
Before installing a new chain, soak the old one in bar and chain oil for a few hours to break it in. All pivot points are properly lubricated by this procedure.
Afterwards, hang the chain from a nail and allow the excess oil to be drained back into the pan.
Put in the chain, tighten it, and then let it warm up.
It’s a good idea to shut down your saw and retighten the chain.
For the next 30 minutes or so, perform light-duty work, such as chopping limbs and small branches. Once you’ve re-tightened the chain, you’re ready to tackle the more taxing tasks.
As part of chainsaw maintenance, cleaning the air filter is essential to extending the saw’s life and improving performance.
Sawdust and dirt from cutting can clog up the carburetor, resulting in a hard start and sluggish performance. In addition to damaging the piston rings, contaminants can also cause the engine’s compression to drop, resulting in decreased power.
Rather than a foam or paper filter, many saws use a screen. An air compressor can be used in these situations to force air backwards through the filter, preventing debris from being lodged further into the media.
Use the edge of a workbench to tap the filter to help to clean out the dirt and debris. The cost of replacing a foam or paper filter is much less than purchasing a new saw.
Use fresh gasoline for best chainsaw maintenance
Most chainsaws owned by homeowners spend more time in the garage than they do cutting wood.
Gums and varnish can build up in the carburetor, preventing the engine from starting and causing rough running, in as little as 30 days.
