It's tempting to warm up your car in winter by letting it idle for several minutes. But doing so is not only ineffective, it can lead to increased wear.

In the winter, it's tempting to warm up your car by letting it run for a few minutes.

When Winter hits, that means temperatures will drop below freezing and you’ll have to start your ice-cold car every morning. It’s tempting to turn the key or hit the remote starter and let the car sit for a while to warm up before driving away. But you shouldn’t let your car idle for a long time if you want it to warm up faster.

Driving your car is the fastest way to increase engine temperature

Cold engines use more gas

When it’s cold, gasoline doesn’t evaporate as well in your engine, making it harder to get the right mix of fuel and air for combustion. Modern cars get around this problem by adding more gasoline to the mix to get things going. This is how the engine will run until it gets to about 40ºF (4.4ºC)..

Even though this gets your engine going, the extra gasoline is bad for the walls of the cylinders. Gasoline is a strong solvent that can wash away the oil that keeps the walls of the cylinders from getting too hot. This can cause engine parts to wear out faster and make them last less long.

To get your car warm, drive it slowly.

Driving your car is the fastest way to get the engine temperature up to 40ºF (4.4ºC) and get the right fuel-to-air ratio. But be careful. Don’t put it in gear and slam the door as soon as you get in. It can take a few minutes for the engine to warm up completely, so start out slowly.

A test by Car and Driver shows that driving slowly warms up your car faster than letting it run at idle. The editors tested how long it took for the cabins of two BMW M340i sedans to reach 72ºF (22ºC) depending on how they were being driven.

At an average speed of 39 mph, it took 9.8 minutes to warm up the inside. Idling, though, took 29.6 minutes.

tips for winter driving

Best Advice for starting your car in Winter

In short, you don’t have to warm up your car in the winter before driving away. Too much idling can shorten the life of your engine, and it doesn’t really heat it up faster.

The best advice is to start your car and only let it sit for a minute or two before driving. Clear the snow off your car and scrape the ice off your windows, and then get going. You’ll save gas and, in the long run, your engine.

keep in mind Idling your vehicle wastes fuel

According to fueleconomy.gov, idling wastes between a quarter and a half of a gallon of fuel per hour (or about 1-2 cents per minute). Idling uses more fuel and emits 80 percent more pollution than restarting your car. You can save money on gas by turning off your engine whenever you’re at a complete stop and it’s safe to do so.

Keep up with your Maintenance

When it comes to saving money, you may have to fork over some cash. Ensure that your car is serviced on a regular basis. According to the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, a bad spark plug can reduce fuel economy by up to 30 percent. Even older vehicles can maintain their fuel efficiency if they are properly maintained.
