What is Fuel Stabilizer? By Adding a stabilizer to gas is like adding an anti-oxidant to gas. It interferes with the chemical reaction that breaks down gas, making it easier for engines to start and run smoothly.

What does Fuel Stabilizer Do?

Before putting your lawnmower, motorcycle, classic car, or other vehicles and equipment away for the season, you should stabilize the fuel. If you tore a rotator cuff trying to start a lawnmower or snowblower after several months in storage without stabilized fuel, you may have learned the lesson the hard way. For starters, what is a fuel stabilizer? Read on to learn more about how to take care of your cars, motorcycle and equipment.

Gasoline degrades with time

Even the fuel you use to power your vehicles and equipment deteriorates over time. In fact, gasoline can begin to degrade as soon as 30 days after purchase. Deposits can build up in the carburetor bowl, preventing the engine from starting.

The main reason seasonal equipment is hard to start or runs poorly is because it has bad gas.

Gasoline changes over time, leaving behind gums, varnish, and other solids that clog the fuel system and stop gas from getting into the chamber where it is burned. In the worst cases, gasoline can change so much that it won’t ignite  anymore.

Gasoline is mostly made up of hydrocarbons, which are chains of carbon and hydrogen atoms that pack a lot of energy. Like regular base oils, it is made by distilling crude oil with heat, pressure, and other catalysts to make different fractions. Gasoline is made up of hydrocarbons that are lighter than those in diesel fuel or other base oils, for example. Refiners add ethanol to the mix, usually at a rate of 10% but sometimes as high as 85%.

Gasoline breaks down over time, though. Fuel breaks down when it is exposed to heat, humidity, atmospheric pressure, oxygen, and other things.

Oil degrades more slowly than fuel

As lighter hydrocarbons evaporate, gums and varnish become more concentrated and less soluble. Gas is also constantly oxidizing, which makes varnish and other gunk even worse.

Gasoline oxidizes faster than motor oil, and you can see the effects of this right away. That’s why it’s important to use high-quality gas and store it in approved containers where air can’t get in too much, like in the back of your truck or under the deck.

Don’t let your gasoline sit to long without being used

When ethanol is added to gasoline at the refinery, it can soak up water from the air. This can cause phase separation, which is when the ethanol and gasoline separate like oil and water. When ethanol has been sitting for a long time and has soaked up enough water, it can clog the fuel system and stop the engine from starting.

why adding a fuel additive is important

Make sure to use gas right away if you can’t make sure to add AMSOIL Gasoline Stabilizer.

What does fuel stabilizer do?

It’s important to stabilize fuel before putting it away.

Every time I fill up my five-gallon gas can, I add gasoline stabilizer. So, I don’t have to worry about my four-wheeler, lawnmowers, chainsaws, and other tools around the homestead going bad because the fuel is old.

But what does fuel stabilizer actually do? Let’s compare it to something else.

You may have heard people talk about your health using terms like “free radicals” and “antioxidants.” A free radical is an electron that doesn’t have a pair, and most of them are unstable and react quickly. They can either give other molecules an electron or take one from them. This starts a chain reaction that can damage cells and cause oxidative stress. Free radicals can cause health problems like heart disease and cancer if they are not stopped.

To fight free radicals, we should eat a lot of foods that are high in antioxidants, which reduce the damage they do. Antioxidants can give free radicals an electron or trap them, making them less unstable without becoming unstable themselves. Antioxidants aren’t magic bullets, but they do a lot to make our health better.

Fuel stabilizer is kind of like an antioxidant for your gasoline. It stops the chain reaction caused by free radicals that makes gas oxidize and turn into varnish and gums. Some stabilizers, like AMSOIL Quickshot, also contain chemicals that increase solubility and break down existing varnish. This helps clean a dirty carburetor and restore performance.

Excellent, thank you. However, rather than relying on my opinion, you should rely on the independent test results shown below.

What about corrosion protection? As demonstrated here, AMSOIL delivers once more.

AMSOIL Gasoline Stabilizer will help preserve your gasoline

If properly formulated, such as AMSOIL Gasoline Stabilizer, fuel stabilizer improves the stability of gasoline to prevent varnish and gum formation, allowing your vehicles and equipment to start when you remove them from storage. AMSOIL Gasoline Stabilizer protects against corrosion during storage to preserve the cleanliness of the fuel system while stabilizing fuel for up to 12 months.

Use AMSOIL quickshot for short term storage

Consider AMSOIL Quickshot for short-term storage up to six months. In addition, it contains chemicals that increase solubility and break down existing varnish, allowing it to clean a dirty carburetor and restore performance.
