Why does my radiator have sludge or slime in it?

Why does sludge form in a radiator, and what can you do about it?
If your car is overheating, pull over and let it cool before checking the coolant level.
Coolant is made of a base (usually ethylene glycol or propylene glycol) that is mixed with water and additives. The base’s main job is to protect against freezing and boiling over. Corrosion, cavitation, and scaling can all be stopped by the additives. If you mix coolants that don’t work well together, the additives can “fall out” of the solution and make sludge or slime in the radiator.
Contaminated coolant: When a car has an automatic transmission, the cooling system for the engine also cools the transmission. If there is a hole in the system, transmission fluid can get into the coolant.
Corrosion: happens when an unbalanced coolant reacts chemically with metal surfaces, leaving behind reddish deposits that look like slime or sludge.
what is causing radiator sludge is to do a fluid analysis
The only way to know for sure what is causing radiator sludge is to do a fluid analysis. The report can tell if there is oil, transmission fluid, or anything else in the coolant that shouldn’t be there.
Fix any problems with the way the car works, and flush the cooling system. Fill it up with a good antifreeze or coolant.
What kind of coolant should I use?
First, let’s talk about the kind you should stay away from.
You probably know about the common “green” coolants that are cheap and can be found at most stores. Inorganic-acid technology (IAT) is used to make the additives in these coolants. IAT uses only inorganic salts like nitrites, phosphates, and silicates to protect.
Formulating with only inorganic salts has its downsides. They run out pretty quickly, and if they aren’t taken care of, scale and sludge can form.
use organic-acid technology to make the coolant (OAT)
Because of these things, most car makers have stopped using these coolants.
You should too.
One solution is to use organic-acid technology to make the coolant (OAT).
These coolants don’t have any phosphates, silicates, or other inorganic salts, so they don’t have most of the problems that green coolants usually have.
Also, they last longer, which is good for everyone.
Last but not least, there is hybrid organic acid technology (HOAT). Most of these coolants are made from organic acids, but they also use some inorganic salts to protect themselves.
A properly made HOAT coolant will last a long time and protect the engine well. Think of it as a belt-and-suspenders approach to protection.
No matter what kind of coolant you use, you should flush the system about every five years to keep it in good shape.
